Cave Paintings |
The patrimony of the Prehistoric Art of the Province of San Luis is present in more than a hundred of located deposits of rock art in the mountain ranges of San Luis and are as old as the presence of the primitive inhabitants of this land.
Around 6,000 AC the man ago has left his mark in these deposits rock through its different expressions from points, lines, forms, anthropomorphous and zoomorfous objects in pictures and rock paintings. An invaluable patrimony of the culture of San Luis to admire, to conserve and to revalue like inheritance for the future generations of the humanity. |
Rodeo de Cadenas
Municipality of San Francisco. Ayacucho department. It is acceded to them after crossing 13.5 km from San Francisco. By the route to Carolina, after 8.5 km it is taken to the right when arriving at the sanctuary of the Virgin of Lourdes. After passing by "Bajo Verde" and the forest of palms caranday, when arriving at the second wooden gate, turn to the right and after cross the river Socoscora on foot, 800 meters walking, we found cave paintings.
This series of paintings made in vertical eaves of a rocky crag of great dimensions, according to made studies, would be of great antiquity and would represent ritual religious scenes of the time. Although they are within a deprived field, allows the access, but to be very accessible, are being deteriorated by the action of the man. This deposit is on the foot of the great eaves of rock, and the used colors are ocher, dark red and black. The meaning of the same ones is not certainly known, but both panels of rock art who exist here, have a particularitity: in his majority they are gigantic concentric circles that radiate zigzags, points, two-color pencils and erratic lines.

Piedra del Santo
Municipality of San Francisco. Ayacucho department. At 10 km of San Francisco, in the hill of the River Juan Gomez, is due to walk river by 40 minutes above. In the center from the gorge, after scaling 100 meters with enough difficulty, we will arrive at the top, where we will observe great rocks that are the entrance of a cave in whose interior they are the paintings.
We will need artificial light to be able to appreciate these paintings in two-color pencils (whitish and ocher) that consist of: a cross of double contour of 35 cm., polygon of zoologic form, quadrilaterals, intercrossed circumferences and perpendicular lines.

Piedra Blanca
Municipality of Luján (distant locality 22km of San Francisco). Ayacucho department. At 6 km of the exit of Luján, by the National route. Nº 146 towards the south, arrives at the stay White Stone, after crossing 2700 meters, we found this deposit on the foot of the Hill "El Realito".
It is the second in South America by his quality and clearness. On two semi-concealed rocks in the mount, it is possible to observe these paintings that, to be able to visualize better are necessary to lean of backs on the floor. Circles and semicircles aligned, juxtaposed, ovoid, aligned points, cuvilinear, spiral and great parallelograms, closed figures consist of zig zags, all of between 14 to 60 cm, in white, gray, celestial and pink colors. Some interpretations establish that by the form in which are the paintings, in a certain sense had a cultual character. Also we can make visits to the near caves and ancient mortars. |
Piedra del Indio or Quebrada del Río
Municipality of Leandro N. Alem (distant place 8km of San Francisco). Ayacucho department. To the Southeast of the locality 7 km are crossed until arriving at the Rope, thence, after crossing the River "La Majada", we will find this deposit to which we will only be able to accede walking almost two hours, and always with a guide of a local, since there is no delimited footpath. After a colorful route, we will find these paintings that, to be semi-concealed between the vegetation, are one of the best ones conserved.
The artistic expression seemed to be a great butterfly with sinuoides lines, cuvilinear closed figures and zig zags in colors white and red dark. The greater image has a size of 70 cm. |
